For several months, Gov. Gavin Newsom has waged a war of words on California’s petroleum industry, accusing it of price-gouging and asking the Legislature to impose a tax on its soaring profits.

“Big oil is ripping people off at the pump, and they’re making more in profits off of Californians than in any other state — that’s why we need a price gouging penalty to hold them accountable and get these profits into your pockets,” Newsom said on Oct. 27 as he summarized what he said were huge increases in third quarter profits.

The author of this column appears to have a crusade of his own to regularly attack Governor Newsom. And he's been given a regular platform for his attacks by this paper. Curiouser and curiouser.

HFAB, who else is Mr. Walters going to blame for California’s idiotic and self-inflicted wounds regarding rampant crime, water supply, electricity, wildfires, feckless mask and jab policies, etc.? It starts from the top but if you’d like to send Mr. Walters the names of other folks to blame, he may expand his horizon. If you’re not a fan of Mr. Walters then you can always skip his column. I usually skip political articles from AP, Amazon Post, NYT, and LATimes unless I want a good laugh and want to read what new hogwash they’re attempting to push as real news. It’s a credit to the SMDJ for including Mr. Walters’ columns. BTW, for those who’d like to be more enlightened, hundreds of (maybe over a thousand) columns by Dan Walters can be found at calmatters.org.

What did Walters say about Enron's style market manipulation- replace refinery with generator: They include declining refinery capacity due to high operating costs, periodic maintenance outages in the few remaining refineries, an uptick in gasoline imports whose prices are affected by the global oil market and transport costs, and a gradual decrease in California’s gasoline demand.
