For the past three years, Rookie, a 3-year-old goldendoodle, has provided comfort and support to the San Mateo community.

Working alongside San Mateo police Officer Allison Adle, Rookie is at the forefront of a growing trend in law enforcement, where therapy dogs are used to manage stress, improve mental health and strengthen connections between police and the public.
In 2021, as students returned to in-person learning following the COVID pandemic, an increase in stress and anxiety became evident. In response, the San Mateo Police Department launched the first Therapy K9 program in the county, one of the first in the state. Rookie was selected for his calm temperament and affectionate nature. After completing extensive training and earning national certifications, Rookie began working with Officer Adle to provide support during stressful situations, attend community events and become a beloved presence at local schools.
As part of her role as a youth services officer, Officer Adle often walks Rookie around schools. Students and staff regularly ask about Rookie when he isn’t present.
“Having Rookie on campus is powerful. Students approach me to talk about a variety of topics, all while interacting with Rookie,” Officer Adle said. “Seeing the joy he brings and the good he does daily is the best part of being his handler.”

Rookie’s presence at schools has been so impactful that Officer Adle partnered with wellness staff and school counselors to create “Rookie’s Room.” Here, students can sign up for a mental health check with Rookie and Officer Adle to discuss personal issues or stressors. This small group setting allows students to speak freely and enables Officer Adle to build deeper connections and offer mentorship.
In critical situations, Rookie has proven invaluable. His gentle demeanor helps break down barriers and fosters trust between the police department and the community. Rookie has been called upon multiple times, both in the community and across the county, to support victims and witnesses involved in serious crimes. He is trained to comfort victims during court testimony, forensic interviews and other times of need. Research shows that therapy dogs reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and increase serotonin levels, making them ideal companions for police officers when dealing with emotionally charged situations.
“Rookie’s presence allows victims to tell their stories and find justice,” said Officer Adle.
Rookie continues to be a source of joy and comfort, highlighting the invaluable role therapy dogs play in modern policing. With Rookie on the team, the San Mateo Police Department is better equipped to address the challenges of law enforcement while providing much-needed compassion and care to the community.
As we face ongoing challenges, programs like the San Mateo Police Department’s Therapy K9 initiative are essential in bridging the gap between law enforcement and the people they serve. Therapy dogs like Rookie show the profound impact of combining compassion with public safety, helping to build a stronger, more resilient community. I encourage all law enforcement agencies to consider integrating similar programs into their communities. The benefits are clear — stronger connections, reduced stress and a more resilient community.
