Ed Holm, a longtime San Mateo High School teacher and Redwood City resident, passed on January 1, 2018 at the age of 87.
Edmond Welling Holm was born to Svend and Justine Holm on September 4, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York.
Known as an exacting but fair teacher, “Mr. Holm” taught Biology, Horticulture, Field Biology, and Desert Ecology at San Mateo High School. In 1993 he was awarded the Kent award for creating the Horticulture class, and received a grant to build greenhouses on campus. He was president of the district’s Teacher’s Association from 1988 to 1992. A former student writes that “He had a huge impact on the lives of others with his humor, caring, and kindness. He was a remarkable man who will never be forgotten.”
He retired from teaching in 1993 and started working part-time at Wegman’s Nursery in Redwood City. He put his years of horticultural experience to use assisting customers, wrote their monthly newsletter, performed garden consultations, and prepared landscape designs.
Ed was a former president and trustee of the Saratoga Horticulture Foundation, and member of the California Horticulture Society, California Native Plant Society, and the International Oak Society.
He is deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, Marion, and two sons, Chris (Donna) of Redwood City and Eric (Brynn) of Placerville; his 5 grand-daughters: Amelia Ireland (James) of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Emma Holm of Seattle, Washington, Susannah and Linnea Holm of Redwood City and Sarah Holm of Placerville; and his sister, Ann Robertson, niece Lisa Pace (Mike) and nephew Peter Robertson (Jill) all of Seattle, Washington.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 3 at Peninsula Covenant Church in Redwood City at 11:30 am. E-mail edholmmemorial@gmail.com for details
