OAKLAND — The Oakland Police Department still plans to review how long it takes officers to respond to calls for service even though an 8-year-old girl has recanted the attempted kidnapping report that sparked the scrutiny.
Officer police spokesman Jeff Thomason said Monday that the girl admitted when officers interviewed her a second time that she had made up the story about being almost kidnapped in front of her elementary school on Feb. 26.
She initially told police she was waiting for her mother when a man tried dragging her into a black van, but she was able to break free and ran home. Officers did not arrive for an hour after the child’s mother phoned, and the department apologized for its slow response.
Thomason says the department will reassess how its prioritizes calls involving children who might be in danger.
