SACRAMENTO — A founder of the liberal activist group MoveOn.org has dropped out of the Democratic primary for California governor and endorsed Attorney General Jerry Brown.
Tuesday’s announcement by Peter Schurman swept away the only obstacle in Brown’s path to the Democratic nomination on June 8.
When he announced his candidacy in early April, Schurman criticized the 72-year-old former governor’s platform, calling it out of date.
But the San Francisco resident says Brown’s campaign has grown stronger since then. He urged Democrats to unite behind him.
A poll released last week by the Public Policy Institute of California showed Brown leading his would-be Republican challengers in hypothetical matchups, former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman and state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.
