Yolanda Kwan
A Newark woman who pleaded no contest to charges of felony embezzlement in April was sentenced Thursday morning to eight months in jail and eight months of court supervision, San Mateo County prosecutors said.
Yolanda Kwan, 44, worked for 14 months as an office manager for Head in the Cloud, an IT firm in Redwood City. During that time, she racked up $12,194.70 in personal expenses on a company credit card.
Kwan has a lengthy record of theft convictions, including a prior felony embezzlement case, as well as a misdemeanor theft conviction dating back to 1995, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
“And those are in our county,” Wagstaffe said. “So if one simply went to our clerk’s office, it would be public record one could get.”
“Obviously people didn’t check her background,” Wagstaffe said.
Kwan was ordered to pay $12,194.70 in restitution to the victim and was remanded into the custody of the court to begin her sentence. She has been out of custody on bail and has no credit for time served, according to Wagstaffe.
Defense attorney Ross Green was not immediately available to comment on his client’s behalf.
