South San Francisco experienced its third officer-involved shooting this year, after two police officers shot a man approaching law enforcement with a knife, according to the police department.
The incident occurred on Dec. 8 around 5 a.m. on the 900 block of Sandra Court in the Sunshine Gardens neighborhood, when a family member called 911 and reported that the man was on drugs and making suicidal remarks. According to the police department, officers tried to speak with him to de-escalate the situation, though he eventually brandished a knife, at which point the police used a Taser.
“There were several attempts to speak and engage with the individual, which weren’t effective,” South San Francisco police Cpl. Brian Blake said.
The press release added that the Taser didn’t work, “and the subject ignored further commands before advancing at officers,” at which point two officers shot the man, who is in his 20s.
No officers or other residents were injured. As part of routine shooting investigations, the two officers are on leave, and the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the incident. The man is in critical condition as of the press release Monday.
In May, a South City man was shot and killed by police officers after trying to force his way into a public restroom on Oyster Point Boulevard and pointing a fake gun at law enforcement. At the end of April, a neighbor dispute in the Rancho Buri Buri neighborhood led to a police officer-involved shooting, leaving a 60-year-old man dead. The suspect, Brian Montana, fired at law enforcement multiple times outside of his house soon after officers’ arrival. He was eventually shot and killed.
Prior to April, the last officer-involved shooting in the city occurred in 2020, and the entire county usually just sees about one officer-involved shooting each year.
“This is the last outcome we want. We hadn’t had any in quite a few years, so to have three in one year is unfortunate. It can be a strain on morale,” Blake said. “But we try to take care of each other, and we have a lot of support from our community.”
