The newest addition to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit is an 18-month-old Bloodhound named Hope, specially trained to track and locate missing people.
Hope’s name is a reflection of the comfort she is expected to bring to families during some of their most difficult moments. Known for their exceptional sense of smell and ability to follow scent trails, Bloodhounds like Hope are a valuable tool to aid law enforcement in finding lost or missing people. Hope is believed to be the only active certified tracking and trailing dog used directly by law enforcement in the Bay Area, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
In 2024, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office received 170 reports of missing persons. San Mateo County’s diverse geography, including rugged coastlines, dense forests and urban neighborhoods, presents unique challenges for search efforts. Hope will play a key role in navigating these terrains to help bring individuals home safely, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
