Local 16-year-old Marina Gatto, who turned a personal fight for legal and social recognition of her two moms into national activism, is adding yet another accolade to her growing pile of honors.
On Monday, the San Carlos girl was one of a dozen women - including celebrities like singer Jessica Simpson - honored by CosmoGIRL magazine for making "a positive impact in the world over the past year."
Gatto nabbed her place among the "Born to Lead Award" honorees for her tireless efforts on behalf of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered community. She helped promote the marriage bill authored by Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, served as grand marshall at the 2003 Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco and speaks out incessantly against immigration restrictions that could lead to the deportation of one mother.
Most recently, she and her mothers, Ramona and Arzu, provided election night commentary for a German television station from Washington, D.C.
Gatto and her family flew to New York for Monday's ceremony which included fellow honorees Simpson, U.S. Olympic gymnast Carly Patterson, actresses Amber Tamblyn and Raven Symone, U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and actor Chad Michael Murray.
Gatto and the other winners will also be profiled in an upcoming issue of the magazine.
