For the first time in five years, the SamTrans Board of Directors approved Wednesday a four-year plan to raise fares starting next year.
Starting Jan. 10, 2016, adult fares will increase to $2.25 and monthly passes will increase to $65.60. Beginning Jan. 20, 2019, the rates will increase to $2.50 for an adult ticket and $72 for a monthly pass, according to the transit agency.
Discount tickets will increase by 10 cents then by 15 cents while discount monthly passes will increase to $27 in 2016 and $31.05 in 2019. Fares for paratransit services will also increase from $3.75 to $4.25 for a one-way trip beginning Jan. 1, 2016, and to $4.75 on Jan. 1, 2019, according to the agency.
SamTrans originally proposed raising paratransit Lifeline rates by 25 cents but opted not to impose an increase based on public feedback.
