A Redwood City-based rescue dog has landed a role in a local musical production and the exposure has generated a waitlist of potential new owners.
Cardi is a 7-month-old Chihuahua mix and she’s been performing in Foothill Music Theatre’s production of “Bullets Over Broadway” the musical since Feb. 28. The play, based on Woody Allen’s 1994 film, runs through March 17 at the Los Altos Hills theater.
Named after the popular rapper Cardi B, this Cardi weighs in at just over 5 pounds and was cast in the role of Mr. Woofles.
“She has two fabulous scenes in the play and I tell my actors you can be sure when the doggy is on stage no one is looking at you,” said Director Milissa Carey. “She’s been a blast and I’m pleased to say [the musical] has been very well received.”
Cardi spends her two scenes in the arms of the actress who plays Mr. Woofles’ owner, and while shy at first, she has grown comfortable under the bright lights and in the presence of a large, sometimes loud audience, Carey said.
The stage crew includes a puppy handler who receives Cardi backstage after every scene and rewards her with a treat.
“We could have gone with a stuffed dog, but we thought it’d be far more adorable to find a real doggy and someone who does our PR said let’s get a dog looking to be adopted,” Carey said, adding that the entire cast has bonded with Cardi.

Cardi was on a euthanasia list at a Central Valley shelter before nonprofit Pets in Need rescued her and brought her to its Redwood City shelter. Cardi spent about a month there before she took on the acting gig.
“Foothill Theatre asked us for a dog for the play and Cardi instantly came to mind because she’s super cute, has a nice temperament and loves to be held. She’s perfect for the role,” said Jacqueline Stewart, development coordinator at Pets in Need.
A cast member adopted Cardi temporarily during the rehearsal and performance run, after which she will return to Pets in Need, though likely not for long.
“People are contacting us now and Cardi has a waitlist of over 10 people who want to meet her,” Stewart said. “A few staff members went to a recent show and during intermission they spoke to the audience and Cardi met a ton of people there and was a huge hit.”
Pets in Need is the first no-kill shelter in Northern California. On Thursday, it celebrates the ribbon cutting of its second location in Palo Alto.
