San Mateo Medical Center patients and staff have healthier options now in the hospital’s snack vending machines. No change for the machines? No worries. All machines now have credit card readers and the snack machines have touch screens offering nutritional information.
The hospital also is home to a new Seattle’s Best coffee machine in its Cafe 39 — the first one in San Mateo County.

Rumor has it Burlingame is getting another bakery. La Boulange is said to have inked a deal for 1152 Burlingame Ave., former home of Design Within Reach, according to an SFGate blog. La Boulange, part of the Bay Break Group, is a French bakery with numerous locations in San Francisco.

Good news for most of San Mateo County’s transit, waste disposal, fire and police protection districts — they managed to supply the state Controller’s Office with required salary and benefit information for employees in time for the website launch Tuesday. However, the Menlo Park Fire Protection District lagged, giving the office "noncompliant salary and compensation reports,” according to State Controller John Chiang’s site.

Sequoia Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Institute is celebrating Heart Month with free blood pressure screenings for the community. According to the National Institutes of Health lifetime risks of hypertension are up to 90 percent in women and 83 percent in men. One in three adults in the U.S. has high blood pressure. High blood pressure has no symptoms but can lead to coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure and other serious health issues.
Residents of San Mateo County need to be particularly careful. The county recently conducted the Health and Quality of Life Survey. The results project that in 2011:
• 88 percent of county residents exhibit one or more cardiovascular risk factors;
• 59 percent are overweight, 21 percent are obese;
• 32 percent have been told more than once that their blood pressure was high;
• 34 percent have been told their blood cholesterol level was high;

• 9 percent are diabetic; and
• 48 percent do not participate in vigorous activities.

Ike’s Place was thought to be moving to Burlingame, but no more. The infamous San Francisco sandwich shop previously posted plans online to open a shop in Burlingame on Oak Grove Avenue by Burlingame High School. That’s no longer the case, according to the company website.

Congratulations to The Tuttles With A.J. Lee of Palo Alto, which was named the 2011 Best Bluegrass Band at the Northern California Bluegrass Awards ceremony held in Redwood City Jan. 29. Other winners include Bill Pitrone of Santa Cruz, who was named Best Male Vocalist; Larry Cohea of Oakland who was named Best Banjo Player; and Jim Mintun of Capitola who was named Best Dobro Player.

The Child Care Coordinating Council of San Mateo County has appointed Sarah Kinahan to the permanent position of executive director as serving on an interim basis since July. Kinahan has been with the nonprofit agency since 2004, first working as a data analyst. 4Cs advances the field of early childhood education.
