A San Mateo man convicted of attempting to kill a man with his fists and tree stakes delayed sentencing until next month after firing his attorney and asking for a new trial.
Jared Fonua, 22, relieved his previously retained attorney, John Hartford, yesterday morning. His substitute counsel asked for time to request a new attorney, according to court records clerks.
Fonua returns to court Dec. 15 for a hearing on the motion and, if denied, sentencing on charges of attempted murder, assault and causing great bodily injury stemming from a June 13 brawl.
On Oct. 6, jurors ended three days of deliberations by convicting Fonua and finding co-defendant Leonard Johnson, 22, not guilty of attempted murder.
Johnson and Fonua were arrested on suspicion of pulling two brothers from a car and brutally beating them with fists and three-foot wooden stakes on the 200 block of North Eldorado Street in San Mateo.

In February 2004, Fonua and another man were arrested after a man was left paralyzed by a shot to the back. The other pleaded no contest and Fonua was acquitted of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and using a firearm in the commission of a crime.
In early June, Fonua and another relative were arrested for fighting in the street. When officers responded, the men allegedly stopped fighting each other and turned on the police until they were hit with a Taser. Each were charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and fighting in a public place.
