The National Weather Service on Wednesday morning canceled a tsunami advisory for the Bay Area and Central Coast, but it remains in effect for other portions of the California coastline.
Humboldt County and Del Norte County were still under a tsunami advisory as of 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service.
A tsunami advisory was initially issued for the California coast on Tuesday evening after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
Northern California tsunami activity began in Crescent City and Humboldt Bay around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. Waves then reached Monterey at 12:50 a.m. and the San Francisco coast at 1:12 a.m., according to the weather service.
"Even though levels have fallen below advisory, the ocean will continue to be dynamic and dangerous, as the water levels will continue to fluctuate. Strong ocean currents will continue to be possible," the National Weather Service's Bay Area office wrote on social media. "While coastal areas, beaches and waterways are now open, please remain aware of your surroundings."
