Truck-mounted mosquito control treatment will take place in parts of Atherton and Redwood City from midnight to 5 a.m. Saturday, July 30, in response to West Nile virus being detected in adult mosquitoes, according to the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District.
The district detected West Nile in mosquitoes collected in Atherton and follows the discovery of seven infected dead birds in the surrounding area between July 6 and July 20, according to the district.
“Given the number of infected birds and mosquitoes found in this area, it’s very important that we act quickly,” said Megan Caldwell, the district’s Public Health Education and Outreach officer. “We know the virus is circulating and there is an immediate risk of human infection.”
The treatment area, which is primarily residential, includes areas of Atherton and Redwood City. It is approximately bounded by Woodside Road to the west, Selby Lane to the south, Atherton Avenue to the east, and the railroad tracks to the north. A map of the treatment area and further information can be found on the district website at smcmvcd.org. Residents with additional questions can call the district at (650) 344-8592 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
