The Hillsborough Police Department is seeking dashcam footage from motorists traveling on El Camino Real Feb. 22 in connection to the shooting of a police officer, Capt. Meme Colla said.
The officer — who is doing well and recovering at home with his family, Colla said — was ambushed and struck by gunfire at 3:49 p.m. in the rear parking lot of the police department Feb. 22, according to a press release. He was wearing a bulletproof vest, which officers wear each day on the job, that helped protect him from more serious injury, Colla said.
The department is following up with leads and interviewed a person of interest in the case Feb. 23, though they are not releasing any more information about the suspect at this time, a press release said.
The press release also noted that HPD is confident the shooting was targeting the department.
“We don’t believe it was targeted just to that particular officer — that’s the most we know,” Colla said.
Now, the department’s investigations bureau is now looking for dashcam footage from 3:30-4:15 p.m. that day on El Camino in the area between Oak Grove and Bellevue avenues.

The department is grateful for the support of the community at this time, Colla said.
“I feel like they are rallying together to support us. We’re really thankful to live in a community that truly appreciates our police department,” she said. “We’re really happy with the ties we have with our community and we thank all of our local partners that have reached out.”
Colla encouraged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and call the police department.
An emergency preparedness information session to be held at the town hall was postponed to make room for additional personnel assisting in the investigation, the police department announced on its website.
