Extensive weed whacking and ditch clearing took place yesterday in San Bruno in an area prone to extensive flooding.
Crews from the San Francisco Conservation Corps and San Francisco International Airport maintenance yard started clearing about 800 feet of the Angus ditch and the Seventh Avenue south ditch that sits between Highway 101 and the Belle Air neighborhood.
The land is owned by San Francisco County and residents pleaded for years for the airport to tame the tangly overgrown brush that prevents water from draining properly.
In November and December 2002 during excessively heavy rain, homes on the 500 block of Seventh Avenue suffered water damage from ditch overflow.
Residents on the block took the issue to the San Bruno City Council to push the airport to take action.
An endangered frog and snake call the ditch home and permits needed to be secured from the California Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency for work to start.
The permits were granted Wednesday which allowed the work to begin yesterday. It will take crews three to four days to clear the ditches.
The ditches did not flood from heavy rains earlier this week but the ditch clearing comes as more rain is expected this weekend.
