A 33-year-old man extradited from Guatemala in 2018 on several felony charges for his role in a 2009 car crash that killed a 6-year-old girl in Menlo Park was sentenced to nine years in state prison Friday after he pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Shannon Fox fought extradition for some two years after his 2016 arrest in Guatemala and was returned to the United States by the FBI Aug. 28, 2018. He will receive nearly five years credit for time served, according to prosecutors.
On Nov. 12, 2009, Fox is said to have been driving a Ford Mustang on the Bayfront Expressway at nearly 80 mph while racing a Honda Prelude just before 2 p.m. He ran a red light at the intersection with Willow Road and collided with a Toyota Camry carrying 6-year-old Lisa Xavier and her parents, according to prosecutors.
After the two vehicles spun out, Fox got into his friend’s Honda Prelude and fled the scene. Xavier was killed by the impact of the collision and her mother was severely injured, according to prosecutors.
Fox was at large until his arrest in Guatemala in 2016, and his trial was set to begin June 10 when his plea deal was reached Friday, according to prosecutors.
Fox’s defense attorney Jeff Jackson said he felt the outcome was fair and that his client is very sorry for what he did. He said Fox told him that not a day has gone by when he has not thought about what happened.
