The Redwood City man slapped with 120 felony charges of animal cruelty and a hefty $200,000 bail bond was released yesterday afternoon after the district attorney declared there is insufficient evidence to prosecute him.
Mario Moreno, also known as Mario Suazo, was arrested last Friday after sheriff's deputies and animal control officers swooped onto his property with a search warrant. More than 100 chickens and roosters were photographed and taken from the property of the 52-year-old man who authorities believe were used in cockfights.
Deputies described the scene as deplorable with a notable stench. However, despite the widespread reports of the coastside coops, there was not a strong enough case to hold Moreno, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
The office formally declined to file charges yesterday afternoon and Mareno was released from jail
