Last Monday night, San Carlos Charter Learning Center fourth grade students Emily Clarke and Nicky del Cardayre had an event called Barks for Books (BFB) in the school library. BFB is a version of the Paws for Tales event, a program run through the SPCA. Children got to read to good citizen dogs that are trained to be calm, gentle and good around people.
"Reading to dogs encourages kids to read because most kids like dogs and that inspires their reading,” the girls wrote in an e-mail describing the project. "We did this as a ROPES (Rites of Passage Experiences) project. ROPES is a school project for fun and inspired learning. We chose to do the BFB event because we like dogs and are interested in tutoring kids!”
ROPES is an optional student endeavor supported by many groups and organizations in the San Carlos community. The program is a student-centered and a student-initiated enrichment activity that connects learning a brand new topic with real life experiences. Students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of projects known as "challenges” in order to earn their rope. ROPES projects are open to fourth, sixth and eighth graders.
