Congratulations to Notre Dame de Namur University's Class of 2005. Commencement ceremonies will be held at the Athletics Field at 10:30 a.m. on May 7. Joan F. Burke, SND, Class of 1967, will be the keynote speaker. Burke is a San Mateo native and is a United Nations representative for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Norma Stang, sister of deceased Sister Dorothy Stang, will accept a doctorate of public service on her sister's behalf. Also, congratulations to Katherine Warner and Kathleen Kubricky who are this year's respective undergraduate and graduate valedictorians.

Burlingame High School sophomore Doug Bojack earned an Eagle Scout rank by the Boy Scouts of America. Bojack earned the Boy Scouts' highest award by planning and coordinating the landscaping of a backyard the Peninsula Association for Retarded Children and Adults' in San Carlos. Bojack, an honor student, will receive the rank at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on May 15.

Disabled and first-generation college students at Cañada College will get a boost from the U.S. Department of Education. Cañada is expected to receive $220,000 annually for five years to help students pay for two-year degrees and transfer to four-year colleges. College President Rosa Perez said Latinos will be the majority of students served by the grant. The college is a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution.

A Carnegie Scholar is among us. The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning selected College of San Mateo math professor Mike Burke to be a 2005 Carnegie Scholar. Burke was one of 21 teachers selected from 300 universities around the world, one of four selected from community colleges. "We are extremely proud that Mike Burke was selected for this honor as he has been a leader in integrative learning programs at CSM for nearly a decade," said CSM President Shirley J. Kelly, in a statement. In the 2005-2006 school year Burke will expand ideas he uses in integrative Learning Communities courses he teaches. Burke co-teaches a course with English professor Jean Mach called "Tools for Thought: Using Math and English to Explore Contemporary Issues." Burke has taught at CSM since 1976.

Fiesta Gardens' fourth grade students will be holding a read-a-thon to help feed hungry kids. Students in "Read to Feed" will read at least 10 pages a night from Monday to Thursday from May 2 to May 13. The students sponsored by The Third Avenue Bookshop for Children, will donate proceeds to Heifer International. For more information call 312-7737.

Twelve Bay Area students, including one from San Mateo High School, are finalists in the Art of Harmony competition. The competition drew over 10,000 finalists nationwide and the winner will have their artwork placed in the World of Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta. A ceremony and reception will be held at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts on May 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Fifth- to eighth-graders will perform the play "Hurricane Smith" on Friday, May 6 at Grace Lutheran School in San Mateo. Students will perform at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and admission is free. The school is at 2825 Alameda de las Pulgas.
