Police in South San Francisco arrested two people over the weekend on suspicion of grand theft after they allegedly discovered “freshly cut” catalytic converters in the trunk of a suspect’s car, police said.
During the weekend, an officer in training stopped a car in the area of Airport Boulevard and East Grand Avenue after noticing vehicle registration issues.
Upon searching the car, officers allegedly found burglary tools, narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and multiple “catalytic converters that appeared to have been freshly cut,” the South San Francisco Police Department said in a statement.
The car’s occupants apparently admitted to police that they had just stolen a catalytic converter 30 minutes before the traffic stop. Police said were able to confirm the theft at a nearby residence.
The 40-year-old man and 32-year-old woman, both from Oakland, were arrested on suspicion of grand theft, possession of burglary tools, and drug-related offenses. The two suspects also had outstanding warrants and prior theft-related convictions, according to the department.
A follow-up investigation using Flock Safety camera data allegedly showed that the same car had been frequenting locations throughout San Francisco County, San Mateo County and Alameda County. The department is coordinating with regional law enforcement agencies to determine if the suspects are linked to other similar catalytic converter thefts in the region.
The department encourages South San Francisco residents to report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods by calling 911 for emergencies or calling the department at (650) 877-8900.
