Opponents of Measure D claim to be supporters of our schools and students. With no new local taxes by the district in the past 40 years, I guess it has been easy to be a supporter. Now with some schools over 70 years old, their support is needed and instead of helping, they are attempting to doom the next groups of high schools students to poor heat, bad ventilation, inadequate classrooms and undersized libraries, that the aging schools now provide.
I have recently replaced the roof of my house after only 25 years. Am I guilty of mismanagement? I also replaced my old galvanized water pipes with copper after only 27 years. More mismanagement?.
There is a time that things cannot be fixed or maintained and do need to be replaced. It is hard to believe that boilers and heating systems designed in the early twenties or thirties are still working at all. Obviously they have been maintained or they would not have lasted this long. I think the opponents may be confusing the high school district with other local school districts that have big budget problems with cutbacks, or teacher salary troubles. The high school teachers have just signed a new contract with a raise and I have not heard of any program cutbacks at the high schools for quite a while. With Crestmoor addressing students with very special needs while providing some income to the district, I think the district officials should be lauded for their interest in improving the school system while not hitting up the taxpayers every few years. Tom Mohr recently said at his televised coffee meeting that the board will not ask for another bond issue to do any more upgrading if Measure D Passes. Vote yes on Measure D and show your support for our students that they deserve.
