Woodside senior Seth Collet and freshman Clara Young both won individual championships at the Central Coast Section swimming championships at Independence High School Saturday.
In all, four individual swimmers from San Mateo County, and the Sacred Heart Prep boys’ 200-yard free relay team, finished in the top-3 at the Central Coast Section swimming championships and advanced to the CIF Stat Meet trials at Clovis West High School Friday.
The top three CCS finishers are automatic qualifiers to state, but others outside the top three can still move if they meet the state qualifying time.
Collet, who had already won CCS titles in the backstroke and 200 free, added the 500 free championship to his resume as he dominated the field. His time of 4:19.73 was nearly six seconds faster than the time Priory’s Cole Kawaja posted, a 4:25.55.
Collet’s time was the third-fastest in CCS history, just off the record of 4:18.26 set by Valley Christian’s Michael Nunan in 2012. Menlo-Atherton’s Michael Powell also qualified for the state meet, swimming a 4:27.16 to finish third — grabbing the last transfer spot ahead of Mills’ Dylan Yang, who finished fourth with a time of 4:35.82. That time still qualified Yang for the state meet, but he declined to swim in the event.
Collet, however, was unable to make it a CCS three-peat in the 200 free as he finished second to King’s Academy’s Nathan Foucu. Collet posted a time of 1:36.05 to Foucu’s 1:35.40. Foucu’s time is a new CCS record, while Collet’s time is the third fastest in CCS history.
Collet’s teammate, Young, certainly made a splash in her first year of high school swimming. She clocked a 23.48, beating Ciara Looney of Sobrato on one-tenth of a second. It’s the second time in three years that a Woodside swimmer has captured the title of “fastest swimmer in the CCS.” Audrey Chung won the title in 2023.
M-A Hailey Preuss also qualified for the state meet with a second-place finish in the 500 free. Her time of 4:55.49 was only bettered by Leigh’s Malia Groen, who swam a 4:53. 41.
The Sacred Heart Prep boys’ relay team finished second with time of 1:24.15, just behind Bellarmine’s winning time of 1:23.46.
