As sophomore Jalen Mingao goes, so go the Summit Shasta Black Bears.
Mingao pulled off an incredible feat Friday, hitting for the cycle in Shasta’s 21-5 win over KIPP Collegiate-San Jose at Gellert Park to cap a two-game sweep in the opening two-game series of Private School Athletic League play. It marks Mingao’s second straight cycle to open PSAL play, having also done so March 10 in the Black Bears’s 16-1 victory over KIPP Collegiate in San Jose.
In two games against the Wolfpack, Mingao is a perfect 8 for 8 with a single, double, triple and home run in each game. He has totaled nine RBIs and nine runs scored in the two wins, and is currently hitting .647 on the year.
Mingao also earned the win on the mound Friday, allowing one run (none earned) on one hit through three innings, issuing one walk, while striking out seven in the shortened four-inning mercy-rule game. Miguel Rojas added three hits with a triple and six RBIs Friday for Shasta, and LeBryan Marcial was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
It has been an up-and-down season for the Black Bears, who have given up double-digit runs in each of their four losses. The worst loss came last Wednesday, when they got thumped 40-0 at home against El Camino. Shasta has also lost by scores of 19-3 to Urban-SF and 17-0 to Monta Vista-Cupertino. In two wins over KIPP Collegiate (0-3, 0-4), the Black Bears scored 37 runs.
Mingao is a second-year varsity player. As a freshman, he hit just .214 with 12 hits, with two doubles, and no triples or home runs. His two cycles have seen the sophomore raise his career average to .315.
