The Skyline Trojans (12-1 Coast North, 23-9 overall) opened a key three-game series against Chabot with an 8-3 win, Tuesday, at Trojan Diamond. Entering play separated by one game in the Coast Conference North, first-place Skyline now takes a two-game lead over second-place Chabot (9-3, 23-9).
Gabriel Melara
Three Trojans homered through the first five innings. Cleanup batter Ethan Casas-Wu got Skyline on the board with a two-run home run in the fourth. Gabriel Melara and Ben Giovannetti followed with back-to-back homers in the fifth to boost the lead to 4-0.
Cristian Padilla
Chabot touched Skyine starting pitcher Nikau Heeney for an unearned run in the sixth. But the Trojans got the run back in the seventh on an RBI grounder by Casas-Wu. The Gladiators rallied for two runs off the Skyline bullpen in the eighth on a two-run single by Emmitt Phinney, but the Trojans scored three times in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Ethan Reader and an RBI single by Ethan Bergan.
Heeney worked six innings to earn the win, allowing one unearned run on four hits and nothing wild, while striking out five. He navigated four Skyline errors to improve his record to 3-2. Cristian Padilla finished it out with 1 2/3 scoreless innings to notch the save, his fifth of the year to move into a tie with Cañada closer Zak Sullivan for the Coast North lead.
Chabot starter Isaac Lucas allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits through 6 2/3 innings to take the loss, snapping a streak of three straight winning decisions. His record falls to 5-4.
Casas-Wu was 1 for 4 with three RBIs, while Giovannetti hit his 10th homer of the year to move into the outright Coast North lead. CSM’s Rowan Felsch and Chabot’s Noah Morton have each hit nine. Sam Salvi paced the Trojans with two hits.
Phinney was 2 for 4 for the Gladiators, improving his Coast North-leading batting average to .413. Daniel Behrmann and Jalen Owens added two hits apiece for Chabot.
Skyline — batting .307 as a team — has four players among the top 10 batting leaders in the Coast North. Bergan is fourth .379; Reader seventh at .353; and Elijah Fairchild ninth at .347. Reader leads the Coast North with 49 hits and is tied for the conference lead with 20 stolen bases.
The three-game series continues Thursday at Chabot College Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Cañada 25, CCSF 2

Two weeks ago, the Cañada Colts were blasted for 25 runs in a loss to CSM. Tuesday, the Colts took retribution on City College of San Francisco. Cañada exploded for a 25-2 victory in Redwood City, banging out 22 hits, including eight players recording multi-hit games. It is the fifth straight win for the Colts (6-7 Coast North, 18-15 overall).

Cleanup hitter John Paul Avila led the way, going 4 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs. Chris Arce had two hits and three RBIs, Kyle Bittner had two hits and two RBIs with four runs scored, and Jonathan Solano and Chalom Rosenberg came off the bench to each notch two hits and three RBIs.
Cañada trailed briefly when CCSF (2-11, 8-22) got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI double by Miguel Esquivez. But after tying it with a run in the bottom of the inning, the Colts threw up an 8-spot in the bottom of the second. They went on to score two in the third, three in the fourth, then sent 14 batters to the plate amid an 11-run eighth.
Colts starting pitcher Brady Greene worked seven innings to earn the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. His record improves to 3-2. Relievers Jose Lopez and Damian Lapuz each turned in a scoreless inning of relief to close it out.
CSM 18, De Anza 1

The College of San Mateo Bulldogs (8-5 Coast North, 18-12 overall) took care on business on the baseball field, racking up 19 hits in an 18-1 win over De Anza College (1-11, 6-27) on the Hilltop. The Bulldogs are now batting .307 on the season, percentage points (.3071) ahead of Coast Conference North rival Skyline (.3066).
Leadoff hitter JoJo Cardinale paced the Bulldogs, going 3 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs. Rowan Felsch added two hits with a home run, five RBIs and two stolen bases, and Brody Barker went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Luca Calderone led De Anza with a 3-for-4 day.
CSM starting pitcher Noah Kenney tabbed the win, working four shutout innings. He allowed five hits and two walks, while striking out seven. His unblemished record improves to 7-0. Chase Yocum and Chris Walsh each added two scoreless innings of relief. Matt Garcia finished it out, allowing one run on one hit in the ninth.
Cabrillo 5, CSM Lady Bulldogs 1
College of San Mateo softball (8-2 Coast North, 28-4 overall) has dropped two of its last three, falling Tuesday at Cabrillo College. The game was deadlocked 1-1 in the sixth, when Cabrillo (8-3, 23-8) broke through for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Ada Neu had the go-ahead hit with a two-run single. Aaliyah Gomez followed with a two-run double to left.
Kennedie Magorian took the ball for the Lady Bulldogs, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits through 5 1/3 innings. The sophomore took the loss, dropping her record to 8-3. Siona Halwani entered in relief, allowing one run on two hits through two-thirds of an inning.
Cabrillo got on the board in the fourth on a fielding error by the Bulldogs, who committed two errors in the game. CSM evened it up in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Izzy Cowne to drive home Luda Gumataotao. Seahawks starting pitcher Alicia Mendez limited CSM to one run on five hits and a walk with zero strikeouts. She retired the side in order in the seventh.
With the loss, CSM falls into second place in the Coast North Conference standings, a half-game behind first-place West Valley. Cabrillo, in third place, trails West Valley by one game, and is a half-game back of CSM.
