The red-hot Serra boys’ soccer team (6-3 WCAL, 10-4, 1 overall) got cooled off in a 2-1 loss Saturday at Sacred Heart Cathedral (3-5-1, 4-7-4), snapping a five-game winning streak. With the loss, second-place Serra (18 points) falls well back of first-place Bellarmine (27 points) with five games remaining in WCAL play, including one head-to-head meeting remaining, Wednesday, between the two league frontrunners.
Senior striker Nate Coughlin scored the Padres’ lone goal on an assist from junior Quincy Huang. Coughlin now has 18 goals on the season, a new career-high. He scored 17 goals as a junior last season.

Girls’ soccer
Nueva School 5, Harker 2
The Mavericks (13-1) rolled to their seventh straight win in non-league action at Harker-San Jose (6-7). Nueva is closing in on its program record for overall wins in a season. In the short soccer history of the San Mateo private school — the Mavericks joined the Central Coast Section in 2018-19 — the girls have never had a losing season. The 2022-23 Mavericks won 16 games, the school record. This year’s squad, currently with 13 wins, has six regular-season games remaining.

Boys’ soccer
Menlo School 3, Priory 1
The first-place Knights (9-0 WBAL, 11-2-2 overall) kept on rolling with a victory on their home pitch over Priory (2-4-3, 5-4-3). Menlo’s top three scorers each recorded one goal in the game. Freshman Blake Putanec and senior Garbeil Gil now lead Menlo with six goals apiece on the year, while senior Carter Techel has five. Juniors Reed Sunwoo and Santiago Sandoval each earned assists in the match. Priory senior Ennio Hoxha scored in the first half for his team’s lone goal.
Design Tech 4, KIPP Esperanza 3
The Dragons (3-3 PSAL North, 4-5 overall) rallied in the second half to win a thriller at home against KIPP Esperanza-San Jose (0-6-1, 0-9-2). Design Tech trailed 2-1 at the half but scored three times in the second. Seniors Soham Kakar and Logan Crusick totaled two goals and one assist apiece for the Dragons, while sophomore Cayden Bunjamin and freshman Mandani Kardad each tallied assists. KIPP senior Marvin Navarette scored twice, and senior Jonathan Hurtado added a goal.
Half Moon Bay 2, Mills 0
Junior midfielder Kaleb Eisen finished with one goal and one assist, both in the first half, to lead the Cougars (3-2-1 PAL Ocean, 6-8-2 overall) at home against Mills (1-4-1, 2-8-2). Third-place HMB (10 points) now trails first Hillsdale and Woodside (tied with 16 points) with four regular-season matches to go. The Cougars face the two PAL Ocean Division frontrunners back-to-back this week.
Hillsdale 5, San Mateo 0
Senior forward Connor Gilbert racked up two goals, while Jaxon Bunch and Bernardo Chaparro each totaled one goal and one assist to lead the Fighting Knights (5-0-1 PAL Ocean, 12-1-2 overall) at home past San Mateo (2-4, 4-11). Senior Luke Lawton added a penalty kick, and junior Tyler Hughes recorded an assist. Junior goalkeeper Emiliano Lopez recorded his sixth straight shutout.
El Camino 5, Oceana 0
Senior forward Ryan Bollentini recorded a hat trick to keep the Colts (4-0-1 PAL Lake, 12-2-2 overall) sitting pretty atop the PAL Lake Division with a shutout at Oceana (0-4-1, 1-6-1). Bollentini was twice assisted by freshman midfielder Emilio Jimenez and once by junior defender Chris Gomez. Jimenez and senior Randy Caoile also scored for El Camino.
Aragon 4, South City 3

The Dons (4-2 PAL Bay, 9-3-2 overall) went the distance at South City (1-3-2, 3-8-3) with two second-half goals to seal the win. Senior Pouyan Sheikh totaled two assists for Aragon, including on the final goal by senior Kevin Altimirano Peralta, with what proved to be the game-winner. Senior Brian Cervantes scored on Sheikh’s other assist in the first half, while junior Rone Yamasaki scored on an assist from senior Damian Samano, and Samano scored on junior Andrew Alatta’s assist. South City senior Marcos Guzman scored two goals, while junior Adrian Yanez totaled one goal and one assist.
With the win, third-place Aragon (12 points) trails first-place Carlmont (15 points) and second-place Menlo-Atherton (14 points). With four league matches to go, the Dons will host both Carlmont (Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.) and M-A (Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 4:30 p.m.).
Carlmont 3, Burlingame 0
The Scots (5-1 PAL Bay, 8-5-1 overall) used three first-half goals to cruise at home against Burlingame (1-3-2, 3-9-2). Carlmont has now won three straight, and seven of its last eight. Senior Derek Rowe and junior Xavier Grussing each scored unassisted goals for Carlmont, while senior Noah Franklin scored on an assist from junior Jayden Lee. First-place Carlmont (15 points) still holds a slight lead of second-place Menlo-Atherton (14 points) in the PAL Bay Division standings.
Menlo-Atherton 5, Sequoia 1
Senior forward Nathan Thurlow totaled two goals and three assists to lead the undefeated Bears (4-0-2 PAL Bay, 11-0-4) to a home win over Sequoia (0-6, 3-10-1). Thurlow assisted on goals by seniors Manasas Lara Alvarez, Lucas Selvik and Yandel Hernadez, and scored with assists from seniors Ayden Wise and Tejin Mehta. Senior midfielder Aaron Villafuerte scored the Raven’s lone goal on a second-half penalty kick.
Second-place M-A (14 points) now hits the road for three straight games, including a critical Friday trip to first-place Carlmont (15 points) for a 4 p.m. start.
Woodside 6, Jefferson 0
Senior forward Mattheo Lacasia and junior midfielder Ben Lange scored two goals apiece to keep the Wildcats (5-0-1 PAL Ocean, 8-6-1 overall) tied for first place in the PAL Ocean Division. Lange added an assist on a goal from senior striker Aiden Farmer, junior midfielder Luca Marks totaled one goal and one assist, and senior midfielder Jared Gutierrez also scored for Woodside. With four games left on the Ocean Division slate, Woodside (16 points) and Hillsdale (16 points) are slated to go head-to-head Friday, Feb. 14, on the final day of the regular season.

Sacred Heart Prep (6-1-2 WBAL, 9-2-4 overall) had its best single-game scoring output of the season with a 7-0 home win over Pinewood (0-8, 0-12).
Crsytal (6-1-2 WBAL, 11-2-2) rolled to a 6-0 win at home over the King’s Academy (2-5-1, 5-7-1).
Terra Nova (1-0-4 PAL Lake, 5-0-4 overall) hosted Westmoor (1-3-1, 2-10-1) for a 0-0 draw.
Girls’ soccer
Mills 7, Oceana 3
Senior forward Abigael Zennadi recorded a hat trick to lead the Lady Vikings (5-0 PAL Lake, 9-4 overall) at home against Oceana (4-1, 4-3) in a makeup game from Jan. 16. With the win, Mills takes outright control of first place in the PAL Lake Division. Zennadi now has four multi-goal performances over the Vikings’ last five games, and has scored 18 goals on the season. Junior midfielder Jocelyn Kwan added two goals for Mills, and senior Reece Roach and freshman Citaly Gerardo Hernandez added one goal apiece. Olivia Perry, Shalien Ekah and Sara Byun each scored in the second half for the Sharks.
Design Tech 7, KIPP Esperanza 0
The Dragons (5-1-1 PSAL North, 6-2-1 overall) got goals for seven different players in a shutout at KIPP Esperanza-San Jose (2-5, 2-7). Sophomore midfielder Kyra Joung fueled the offense with three assists, while seniors Desiree Torres and Tessa Martin, junior Ella Lewis, sophomore Kathleen Hananouchi and freshmen Serena Glass, Anna Pargot and Lily Kayla scored one goal apiece.
In other action ...
Nueva (12-1) cruised to a 12-0 home win over Summit Shasta. The Mavericks’ scoring output ties the program record for goals in a single game. Nueva has thrice previously scored 12 goals, once last season, Dec. 15, 2023, against El Primero-San Jose; this season, Dec. 12, 2024, against ACE Charter-San Jose; and this season, Jan. 15, against Design Tech.
