Sacred Heart Prep top seeds in CCS water polo
The Sacred Heart Prep boys’ and girls’ water polo teams, which both captured the West Catholic Athletic League regular season and tournament titles, were selected as the top seeds in the Central Coast Section Open Division bracket — which also means they are the top teams in the section, overall.
The CCS tournaments begin Saturday with quarterfinal matchups and concludes the follow Saturday, Nov. 9.
On the boys’ side, SHP (16-10) will host No. 8 seed Mitty (17-10) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Menlo School (18-9), which finished fourth in both the WCAL regular-season standings and the league tournament, garnered the No. 4 seed. Despite being the higher seed, the Knights will go on the road to take on No. 5 Santa Cruz (19-5) at 11:30 a.m. at Aptos High.
Division I sees the Peninsula Athletic League’s Bay Division tri-champions in the bracket, along with Serra. Woodside (16-6), which earned the top seed out of the Bay Division based on tiebreakers, got the No. 3 seed in the Division I bracket and will host No. 6 Gunn (12-13) at 1 p.m.
The Bay Divisions other two champions, Sequoia (16-7) and Menlo-Atherton (15-10), will meet for the fourth time this season at 2:30 p.m. at M-A. The fourth-seeded Ravens and fifth-seeded Bears split their regular-season series, with M-A posting a 13-9 win Sept. 23 and Sequoia returning the favor with a 14-11 Oct. 21.
The two met for a third time in the Serra tournament Oct. 26, with M-A posting a 14-9 victory.
Serra (16-11), despite going just 1-6 and finishing in a last-place tie with Valley Christian in WCAL play, earned the No. 2 seed in Division I and will take on No. 7 Westmont (17-6) at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Prep.
In the girls’ Open Division, SHP (24-2) will host No. 8 St. Francis (11-13) at 10 a.m. Menlo School (11-11), which finished runner-up to SHP in the regular season and WCAL tournament, was given the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Stevenson (18-8) at 1 p.m. at Aptos High.
The PAL’s top three qualifiers — undefeated Bay Division champion Menlo-Atherton, second-place finisher Woodside and third-place Aragon — were all placed in the Division I bracket.
M-A (18-5) earned the top seed and will host No. 8 Wilcox (17-2) at 11:30 a.m. Woodside (13-8) got the No. 6 seed, but will host No. 3 Los Altos (17-8) at 2:30 p.m. Aragon (10-5), which won the PAL CCS play-in game over Ocean Division champ Sequoia, was seeded No. 7 and will face off with No. 2 Mitty (11-13) at 10 a.m. at Menlo-Atherton.

Hillsdale’s Corcoran, Crystal’s Zhong lead county contingent at CCS
Hillsdale freshman Kayla Corcoran followed up her PAL title with a tie for 14th place at the CCS tournament, along with Crystal’s Claire Zhong, as both carded 4-over 75 at Rancho Seca Golf Ranch in Monterey Tuesday.
Two more Gryphons, Olivia Lee and freshman Victoria Cui, both finished with 77s to finish in a five-way tie for 25th. Nueva’s Cami and Annabel Yen finished finished in ties for 35th and 39th with rounds of 79 and 81, respectively. Carlmont’s Tessa Lee, another freshman, finished in a tie for 43rd with an 82. Her teammate, senior Ellie Molholm, along with Hillsdale senior Ashlyn Johnson and Aragon’s Kate Chong, all finished in a a six-way tie for 45th after carding rounds of 83.
Aragon junior Hannah Lin and freshman teammate Autumn Ogawa, finished in a tie for 60th with rounds of 87. The rest of the scoring for Aragon: Ariel Ogawa (69th, 92), Bridget Stewart (80th, 95) and Addison Padian (91st, 98). Carlmont’s other scores were: Karuna Mungali (91st, 100), Dakota Chang (99th, 103), Kathryn Winters (104th, 111) and Kara Kim (84th, 96).
The rest of scoring for Crystal: Annabel Shek (87th, 97), Casey Louie (115th, 132) and Taylor Fleshman (116th, 134).
In the team standings, Valley Christian won its fourth straight CCS team title with a score of 366. Stevenson (375) and Harker (398) finished second and third and all three advanced to the Northern California regional tournament.
Aragon was seventh as a team with a 444, Crystal came in 11th with a score of 458, while Carlmont was 12th with a score of 464.

Menlo wins WBAL doubles title
Menlo’s Izzy Klugman and Kate Hsia, both seniors, won the West Bay Athletic League’s doubles championship, posting a 7-5, 6-0 win over Harker’s Olivia Guo and Omya Vidyarthi.
