The Bears have been an unstoppable force in the West Bay Athletic League this season, and Thursday realized their dream of a Foothill Division championship.
Mercy-Burlingame (7-0 WBAL Foothill, 21-5 overall) swept 25-18, 26-24, 25-21 over Notre Dame-Belmont to spoil Senior Night at Moore Pavilion. Paired with a four-set win over Sacred Heart Prep earlier in the week, Mercy now holds a one-match lead over second-place SHP in the WBAL Foothill standings with one match to go. Mercy travels to SHP next Wednesday for the regular-season finale. The best SHP can do with a win is earn a co-championship in the Foothill.
This marks the first league title in the WBAL’s upper division since 2010 for Mercy. The program celebrated its last league championship in the lower WBAL Skyline Division in 2016.
Senior outside hitter Ava Cacao led the attack Thursday, totaling 16 kills with a .353 hitting percentage, while senior Isis Ordaz added seven kills. Cacao fell a dig shy of a double-double, totaling nine digs and one ace. Senior libero Amira Festejo Rivera led the Bears with 12 digs, senior middle blocker Mia Ferdinand totaled four blocks, while senior setter Clare O’Brien was credited with 18 assists and senior setter Lana Trehan notched a double-double with 13 assists and 10 digs.
Mercy has now won 12 of its last 13 matches overall dating back to Sept. 19. The Bears’ only loss during that stretch was a four-setter Oct. 12 to Folsom in the championship game of the Harbor Tournament.
M-A still tied for first in PAL Bay
The Bears (12-1 PAL Bay, 22-7 overall) maintained a share of first place in the PAL Bay Division with one regular-season match to play with a 25-13, 25-19, 25-21 win at home over Hillsdale. M-A and Burlingame are tied for first place heading into this coming Tuesday’s Bay Division finale, when M-A travels to Aragon, and Burlingame is at Sequoia.
Senior middle blocker Sienna Morales led the attack Thursday with 10 kills, while outside hitter Dani Eline totaled eight kills and nine digs. Senior setter Meki Maile recorded 24 assists and three service aces.
Burlingame (12-1, 15-5) kept pace with a 15-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 15-5 win at Aragon (8-5, 16-9).
Summit Shasta clinches PSAL crown outright
The Black Bears closed out the regular season needing a win to earn the Private School Athletic League Bay Division championship outright, and delivered a 30-28, 25-14, 25-13 sweep at second-place University Prep (8-2, 14-12). It marks the seventh straight league title for the Daly City-based charter school on the same plot of land that once housed Serramonte High School. Summit Shasta has now won 43 straight league matches dating back to 2017.
Junior outside hitter Bianca Flores recorded a double-double Thursday with 18 kills and 17 digs, both team-highs. Sophomore Daniela Ruiz added 17 kills, senior Cecelia Chow recorded 15 digs, and Chow, Flores and Vanessa Xu scored three service aces apiece.
