The boys’ tennis season got underway Monday with reigning Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division champion San Mateo (1-0 PAL Bay) opening with a 7-0 win at home over Woodside (0-1).
Nicholas Throgmorton
Mateo earned its first Bay Division title since 2000 last season, and its first overall league title since 2007 when the team ruled the Ocean Division.
“All those disappointments, all those last minute defeats, they were all washed away with the title,” San Mateo head coach John Daquioag said.
The Bearcats ultimately advanced to the second round of the 2023 Central Coast Section boys’ tennis championships, earning a 4-3 win over Lynbrook in the first round. They fell in the second round to No. 2-seed Cupertino, who went on to win the CCS championship with a 4-3 victory over Menlo in the finals.
“I think it just shows how hard the kids have been working,” Daquioag said. “You’ve got to have a good team that’s hard working ... and that’s what you need year in and year out, seven good matches to win a title.”
No. 1 single Nicholas Throgmorton went on to reach the semifinals in the CCS Boys’ Tennis Singles Championships. The then-junior opened with a 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (9) win over Leigh’s Noah Nguyen in the first round, and got past Menlo-Atherton’s Alex Parikh-Briggs 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (8) in the quarterfinals. Throgmorton was eliminated in the semifinals by No. 1-seed Charlie Underwood of Half Moon Bay 6-0, 6-0.
Now a senior, Throgmorton led the way for Monday’s sweep, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Woodside’s Owen Demas.
“He looks great,” Daquioag said. “He’s down to 220 pounds. ... We’re looking to defend, so he’s big part of it.”

Daquioag has good reason to be optimistic. The program graduated just two seniors from last year’s squad in David Joseph and Zach Tuzar.
The Bearcats didn’t drop a set Monday, as No. 2 single Kaden Chung won 6-2, 6-2; No. 3 Dylan Chua won 6-1, 6-1; and No. 4 Nikko Apikelis won 6-0, 6-1. In doubles play, No. 1s Ryan Tseng and Paolo Toledo won 6-0, 6-2; No. 2s Ronit Jambekar and Siddarth Ravi won 6-4, 6-1; and No. 3s Kellen Chang and Dane Tuzar won 6-0, 6-0.
League play in the PAL Bay Division consists of 14 matches, with each of the eight teams meeting twice. Regular-season play concludes Tuesday, April 16.
The PAL/CCS Qualifying Tournament opens Wednesday, April 17, featuring four PAL teams — the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers from the Bay Division, and the first-place Ocean Division champion — with the winner advancing the CCS team tournament. The PAL Bay Division champion earns an automatic bid to the CCS tourney and a bye in the PAL tourney.
