For the first time in his 22 years at the helm of the San Mateo Bearcats, head coach Jeff Scheller will coach in a Central Coast Section championship game.

The Bearcats (9-3) entered the postseason not having won a playoff game since 2009, but have now pull off back-to-back stunners to advance to the CCS Division III finals. The most recent chapter of No. 8-seed San Mateo’s Cinderella run came Friday night, with junior quarterback Lukas Fitzgerald scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute to play for a 40-36 win at No. 4 Live Oak-Morgan Hill (9-3).
