The boys of summer got cooking in the final weekend of January with Friday’s opening day on the JUCO baseball circuit.
College of San Mateo swept two at home Friday and Saturday from Shasta College, while Skyline College swept a home-and-away two-game set from San Joaquin Delta. Cañada College split a two-game series at home against Sacramento City College.
The California Community College Athletic Association regular season spans from January to April. It precedes the Feb. 13 opening of the NCAA Division I baseball season by three weeks. The San Mateo County high school baseball season opens the last week of February, with the first local games Tuesday, Feb. 24, including El Camino traveling to Capuchino for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
Menlo College opens NCAA Division II play Friday, Feb. 6, at Cal State East Bay. The Oaks’ hoe opener in Saturday, Feb. 7, against Cal State East Bay at Cartan Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Bulldogs sweep Shasta

The College of San Mateo Bulldogs (2-0) stole a run in the first inning of the season and kept adding on for a 5-3 victory over Shasta (0-2) on opening day on the Hilltop. Jeremy Wrona and Lucas Schumaker executed a double steal of second and third, and Wrona scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore catcher Ethan Lopez.
The Bulldogs saw a three-run lead slimmed to 3-2 in the top of the eighth, but answered back in the bottom of the frame with a two-run double from freshman Carter Bleeker.
Sophomore right-hander Corbin Giesen earned the win with four scoreless innings of relief. Sophomore starter Michael Volkman took a no-decision after three scoreless frames, and sophomore right-hander A.J. Minyard earned the save, after allowing one run through 1 1/3 innings.
CSM shored up the sweep Saturday with a 7-5 victory over Shasta. The Bulldogs used a four-run fourth to open up a 6-1 lead, with sophomore Aaron Babaev supplying a bases-clearing three-run double. Freshman right-hander Elliot Webb earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Right-hander Brody Ceyrolles worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.
Wrona enjoyed a three-hit day at the top of the order, and Bleeker went 3 for 6 with a walk, two doubles and two RBIs in the series.
CSM returns to the field Tuesday, traveling to College of Marin for a 1:30 p.m. start. The Bulldogs are back home this coming Friday to host Merced College at 1:30 p.m.
Slick-fielding Trojans sweep Delta

The Skyline Trojans (2-0) opened the season with two errorless games, winning Friday’s season opener 7-5 over Delta at Trojan Diamond, then traveling to Stockton to sweep Saturday with an 8-5 victory. Delta (0-2) was plagued by errors, committing eight in the series, four in each game.
Sophomore Nick Tobin paced the Trojans, going 4 for 8 with two RBIs in the series. Sophomore leadoff hitter Santino Nanez was 3 for 8 with a walk, a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Sophomore left-hander Steven Dalton earned the win in Friday’s opener, allowing two runs on three hits through five innings of work. Sophomore Luca Dickinson earned the save through 2 1/3 scoreless innings. In Saturday’s series finale, freshman right-hander Aidan McGrath allowed two runs on five hits through four innings of work to earn the win. Sophomore Franco Moran fired 1 1/3 innings to close it out for the save.
Skyline now travels to Butte College for a three-game series opening Thursday.
Colts win wild finale

The Cañada Colts (1-1) bounced back from a 13-10 loss to Sacramento City (1-1) in Friday’s season opener, triumphing Saturday by rallying for a nine-run sixth to win it 21-11.
After letting an 8-5 lead slip away Friday, the Colts returned Saturday to jump out to an early 9-1 lead, fueled by an eight-run second. Sac City responded with crooked numbers in the fifth and sixth to it 10-all, before Cañada sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead 19-10. Sophomore Stone Daniel-Savage had the go-ahead hit with an RBI single down the left-field line to score sophomore Logan Faildo.
Daniel-Savage was 3 for 6 in the game with a double, a home run, two runs and four RBIs. Sophomore Matthew Lofberg added two hits with a double and four RBIs, and sophomore Patrick Sanchez led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run.
Selway was 5 for 8 with a double and four RBIs in the series. Sanchez, Lofberg and Daniel-Savage added four hits apiece, while Cañada hit .366 as a team.
Next up, Cañada hosts Lassen College, Friday at 1 p.m, for the first of a two-games set.
