Aragon (11-1, 19-5) rallied in the second half to claim the PAL Ocean Division boys’ basketball title with a 60-50 home win over Mills (7-5, 9-14), then had to play the waiting game. The Dons’ game finished before the San Mateo-Hillsdale matchup, but that didn’t spoil the celebration for head coach Hosea Patton’s team at the final buzzer.

“Yes, they did (celebrate), because our destiny was in our own hands,” Patton said. “Champs is champs. Co-champs, they were so excited, so they celebrated, and deservedly so, not knowing what was going on down the street.”
It wasn’t until the team returned to the locker room that the Dons turned into the San Mateo-Hillsdale livestream, and watched destiny take its course as Mateo scored a 54-47 upset to knock Hillsdale out of first.
“It was like the basketball gods were totally working tonight,” Patton said.

Aragon senior Kaleb Brodeth scored a team-high 17 points to fuel a second-half comeback, 12 of them coming in the fourth quarter.
“He carried us ... pretty much in the second half, when we needed it offensively,” Patton said.
The Dons trailed 25-22 at the half, but won the third quarter 13-4 to jump ahead. Patton said junior Alec Ziskind was the Dons’ defensive anchor, who helped to temper the shooting of Mills’ dangerous long-range guards.
Aragon led the PAL Ocean Division standings Jan. 30 heading into its last matchup with Hillsdale, but the Knights moved into a first-place tie by virtue of a 52-35 victory. Aragon finished the regular season on a four-game winning streak.
