Serra golf coach Joe Hession said that when you're coaching a once-in-a-generation type talent such as Jordan Cox, "I just let him do his thing."
The junior phenom first started playing at 3, broke par at 12 and shot a career-low 65 a year ago at Green Hills Country Club in Millbrae. Cox's future seems as limitless as the Bay Area skyline. He shot a 3-under-par 68 to finish in a tie for third-place in the Central Coast Section tournament; then fired a 2-under-par 70 at Valley High Country Club in Elk Grove to finish second in the Northern California tournament. On Monday, Cox competed in a U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Ohio, shooting a 142 over 36 holes, just five strokes off from a berth into golf's second major. Cox has plenty of experience in big-time events, finishing as the runner-up last year at the prestigious U.S. Junior Amateur. With booming 300-yard drives, soaring iron shots and imagination around the greens, Cox has all the tools to someday make the PGA Tour.
