To date, 68 percent of Foster City residents have mailed back their Census questionnaires, according to the city. The city is encouraging its residents to fill out the form so it may get its fair share of federal and state representation and funding. The mail response rate is important as Census employees plan for the important door-to-door workload that begins in May during which all households that have not returned a census form by April 22 will receive a visit from the Census Enumerators. If 100 percent of households in the United States mailed back their forms, taxpayers would save $1.5 billion.

The Half Moon Bay City Council is considering a sales tax increase, a hike to the hotel tax and a utility users tax to help bridge a $2.1 million ongoing structural deficit. The council is considering spending nearly $50,000 to poll the city’s residents to see which of the tax hikes is most acceptable and most likely to pass a November vote. The city may form a citizens task force, however, to help it determine the best way to raise money in these trying economic times. Either way, Half Moon Bay residents will likely have to decide if they want to tax themselves more to live in the coastal community.

A Caltrain passenger captured an incident on cell-phone video last week where an unruly passenger was Tased by a transit police officer at the Hillsdale station and posted it on YouTube. The deputy deployed his Taser after unsuccessfully trying to calm the 29-year-old man down. Trouble is, only one of the prongs struck the unruly passenger, the other glanced off an innocent passenger, according to Caltrain. The incident happened on a southbound train just before midnight after the San Francisco Giants played an exhibition game against the Oakland A’s last Thursday. No one was injured during the scuffle. The unruly passenger was taken into custody by San Mateo police officers. A female passenger on the train can be overheard on the video saying "if you’re going to Tase someone — actually hit him.”
