It is unfortunate that staff reporter DiNapoli partially quoted my public comment. I have said repeatedly since my attendance at City Council meetings beginning in the winter of 2022, when we learned the Municipal Services Building’s zoning was traded from “mixed use” to “high density housing” with the Community Civic Campus’ zoning of “housing,” that we wanted this one building, the Municipal Services Building, taken out of the housing element, as our city attorney has stated can be done, by replacing it with another city parcel.
Gov. Jerry Brown abolished the Redevelopment Agencies and the “Campus” property would have been absorbed by the state, so the city swapped the MSB’s zoning of “mixed use” with the Campus’ zoning of “housing” so South City did not lose this property to the state.
Ms. Fong mentioned the high cost of at-market rate units averaging $4,000 a month in South City, but the entire parcel — Pacific Market, Gunter’s, O’Reilly’s, DaVita Dialysis Center — will all be demolished and at least 150 affordable housing units will replace these businesses.
However, we are asking for this one stand-alone building, the Municipal Services Building to be taken out of the housing element for the good of our community as an intergenerational, mixed-use community building to complement the Community Civic Campus.
