In response to the Aug. 22 article, “Millbrae City Council races taking shape” it’s crucial that voters understand the differences between District 1 candidates Stephen Rainaldi and Ghassan Shamieh. With neither having held public office, it would have been helpful if the article differentiated between the candidates’ policies. But unfortunately, it looks like Shamieh decided to merely echo and confirm Rainaldi’s actions.
When Millbrae faced the La Quinta hotel controversy, Rainaldi stepped up and demonstrated true leadership. He engaged with county officials, collaborated with city leaders and worked closely with the community to ensure that the rights of Millbrae citizens were upheld. Shamieh, on the other hand, remained silent. Now, postrecall of councilmembers who failed to support Millbrae residents, he claims to “stand firm” in defending Millbrae from imposed projects. However, his actions — or lack thereof — tell a different story.
Moreover, following the recall, Shamieh scrubbed his campaign website, removing ticker tape out-of-town radical endorsements and eliminating controversial platform sections. This sudden rebranding suggests he’s more concerned with saying what he thinks will get him elected than standing by genuine convictions.
Stephen Rainaldi, however, has demonstrated his commitment to Millbrae. He brings facts to the conversation and takes decisive action when needed most. The choice is clear: support the candidate with a proven dedication to Millbrae, not one who only appears when it’s politically convenient.
I hope Millbrae voters have learned from recent experiences and choose the candidate who truly stands with them — Stephen Rainaldi. Let’s vote wisely and avoid another recall.
