Editor,
Based on which legal principles is the caravan — now amassing at our border with Mexico — allowed to skip Mexico and choose to request political asylum in the United States?
International law regulating the treatment of refugees simply states that those fleeing for good cause shall apply for political asylum in the first country which they enter and which offers them safety and the right to seek political asylum. In the case of this caravan this first safe harbor would be Mexico. Furthermore, since when is poverty a legal ground for granting political asylum to anyone? Are we supposed to grant political asylum to all the single mothers of the world simply because their partners deserted the family thus placing an unbearable economical burden on the mother alone? Conversely, is not the widely spread dissolution of the family unit the very reason for endemic poverty in certain societies and thus one of the main causes for the formation of violent gangs?
The violent gangs terrorizing the single mothers of Honduras have not descended from Mars, but are engendered and perpetuated by the very single mothers who are now so righteously knocking our door down. This very simple reasoning is the cause for the political tide turning in Europe and may have similar results here; Hillary said so much in one of her rare moments of candor when she suggested that the Europeans should stop the African migration before things turn really ugly in Europe.

The good news is that I bet Mexico starts enforcing its southern border with more vigor. Mexicans are getting as upset as we are regarding illegal immigrants forcing their way into their country. This caravan has not been helpful to those on the left as it has shown our president to be strong against this invasion, and it shows also that the left has no plan to deal with it except asylum for all. Build the Wall.
Chris what will you perhaps do after your president 4 yrs or 8 yrs term out. Will you ridicule the next POTUS? George W. Bush said one of the most important things a President has to know is enhance the office and run the country in a Presidential manner. Trump is not very presidential.
Yes, I am so enjoying spending my tax dollars on this bit of political theatre. Needlessly deploying the army to a well regulated border is just the thing. I also love the hyperbole: "Invasion". And how well I remember Obama calling for all central americans to come and get free asylum. Remember when we handed out cash bonuses to each asylum seeker, and granted them asylum immediately on setting foot into the country?
Veteran leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was sworn in as Mexican president on Saturday, vowing to see off a "rapacious" elite in a country struggling with corruption, chronic poverty and gang violence on the doorstep of the United States.
I'm not clear on why the Daily Journal thinks it is necessary to let people parade their ignorance in the Letters section.
