Editor,
Jon Mays is one heck of a good writer.
In his column, “What is the DJ?” he began with a parable (which included reference to B.B. King’s famous guitar) as a metaphor to help define what the DJ is. His theme was almost lyrical in describing how the Daily Journal’s whole is greater than its parts.
Then Jon used clear and concise explanations of his key points: 1). The DJ is a consistent presence in all of our lives; 2). It’s a place for the community (including DJ staff) to work together to share interesting things to learn about — things that matter, and things that make a difference in our lives; and 3). Jon explained that we are all the products of our community, and, of the collected wisdom of the people who believe in that larger community.
Finally, he summarized that ever since the Daily Journal launched, it’s the people who make up the DJ. He pointed out that supporters of the Daily Journal know that “a community is better if it is well informed.” And that our “Daily journal” is a resource to communicate with one another.
As any excellent writer is known to do, Jon finished his explanation of “what the DJ is” with a wonderful exhortation to us all. From Ernest Hemingway, no less. To wit, that we all must continue to move forward. We are in this with one another for the long haul.
Thanks, Jon. Well said.
