I enjoyed Annie Tsai’s tribute to Samaritan House in the Daily Journal Aug. 19. The nonprofit deserves the recognition for its impactful work with underprivileged individuals in San Mateo County, providing, as described, essential services such as food, housing, and financial advice.
Health care services are also offered through Samaritan House. Since retiring from Kaiser Permanente in 2018, I have had the privilege of volunteering at the medical/dental clinic in San Mateo a few days each month. This experience has been incredibly fulfilling.
When there, I wear my white coat once again and return to a role I have always cherished. I work alongside some of the kindest, most passionate, caring, and hardworking staff members that I have ever met. I listen to patients’ stories about their challenges trying to build a better life and hear the determination in their voices. It inspires me. I am also often the recipient of their expressions of deep gratitude, not only for the care they receive from me and others, but also for the safe and compassionate environment that Samaritan House provides.
Samaritan House is a gem, and San Mateo residents with free time should consider volunteering there in some capacity. Based on my own experience, I can attest that you will get far more out of it than what you put into it. Those with no time but extra resources should consider donating. I have seen firsthand how donation dollars are spent wisely and do great good.
