Over the past few days, I have to say that I suffered through the anguish of our school having to remove the name of its teams since 1926 (“Sequoia High School name change final” in the April 19 edition of the Daily Journal). Kind of like the five stages of living with a death of a friend or family member. Never the less, sadly what’s done is done.
In 2000, the alumni compromised, by allowing the Raven to become the mascot? And we thought it was done, well we know it wasn’t and as of the 18th the feelings of thousands and the foundation of what Sequoia was built on, by its alumni have been ignored. Those alumni who went on to serve in the military or became teachers, coaches, city leaders. Yet I know and understand that political correctness and the interpretation of Assembly Bill 30 led to legitimize the final decision.
The district has the power to give back to a group of individuals that were given so much and have taken so much of what was one of the greatest times in their lives. In all nations, including the Aztecs, all held in high regard in their history of being warriors. I personally think the name should be the Warriors and I hope my fellow alumni agree, and with all due respect to the current student body and especially to the athletes. Please give us back just a little of what we have loved and cherished for so many years. “ Please” and Thank you.
