After Hurricane Katrina took place in 2005, San Carlos adopted the city of Pass Christian in Mississippi to help with recovery. My wife and I made numerous trips to “The Pass” along with other generous souls from San Carlos. We made friends in Mississippi we stay in touch with to this day, some of whom have traveled to San Carlos to visit.
We arrived soon after the tidal surge brought its devastation from the Gulf. FEMA, the Red Cross, church groups and the Salvation Army (along with many other types of support) were quickly on the scene to lend a hand.
Recently, I read a great story in the local paper about the Salvation Army and its long and generous history. It reminded me of how they helped out after Katrina. They fed me (and I didn’t even live there) and many others free of charge for quite some time. I remember at least one huge warehouse the Salvation Army stocked with goods for needy victims. The Salvation Army continued to have a presence long after others helping out were gone.
Almost weekly, I travel by a huge Salvation Army Building in Modesto where many homeless people are given support. The services they provide to needy folks are endless
In the Bay Area, whenever I see their Red Kettle or hear the friendly bell I am reminded of how much they do in a world that needs their services. They are truly a gift.
