Editor,
San Carlos, please let’s not remove mature trees in Harrington Park as part of the Laurel Street Phase 1A redesign.
While improving public spaces is important, cutting down healthy, established trees in a park setting runs counter to the values San Carlos residents hold dear — sustainability, shade, beauty and a sense of community rooted in nature.
City staff have frequently noted that residents want more shade in our parks and on Laurel Street. Removing mature trees for a restroom seems to indicate that local feedback regarding shade isn’t being incorporated.
Mature trees cannot simply be “replaced.” New plantings will take decades to provide the same height and shade canopy that the existing trees already offer.
I urge the City Council to pause this portion of the redesign. Let’s celebrate and preserve Harrington Park’s mature trees, especially during our centennial year. Please protect this green section of downtown San Carlos.
