To the Editor:
Recent Letters to the Editor (Mr. Robert Bacon on January 5 and Mr. Al Ferrer on January 2) renew the resolve of the Peninsula Humane Society to improve communications with the community we seek to serve.
In a subsequent telephone conversation, Mr. Ferrer agreed the only truly humane solution to the plight of the pit bull puppies rescued on Christmas Day was to end their suffering. The unweaned puppies were so sickly they could not have survived even with expert, 24 hour care. It was the failure in communications rather than the care of the puppies that upset Mr. Ferrer and he has since accepted our apology and our promise to improve communications.
Mr. Bacon asks "What does the Peninsula Humane Society actually do?" We care for injured and stray animals, provide humane education to generations of San Mateo County schoolchildren, offer support services to pet owners, enforce animal protection laws, rehabilitate and release local wildlife and witness daily miracles when animals are placed in loving homes. We've invited Mr. Bacon, who is a true animal lover, to visit the shelter and to witness these miracles firsthand.
We extend the same invitation to every member of our community. PHS Communications Director Scott Delucchi encourages your phone calls at 685-8510. In the meantime, the staff, board and volunteers of the Peninsula Humane Society strive daily to fulfill their pledge to protect and care for the animals of San Mateo County.
