Editor,
The word “gerrymander” was created in 1812 in Massachusetts by combining Gov. Elbridge Gerry’s last name with the word “salamander.” It was used by political opponents to mock a redistricting plan Gerry had approved.
The term quickly “caught on” and was adopted nationwide to criticize the manipulation of voting districts for partisan gain.
So, with little time for proper legal public review prior to November’s election, Gov. Newsom wants to, so to speak, “temporarily” remove our voter elected Nonpartisan Citizens Redistricting Commission’s current areas and representatives to put in his own mapping and representatives to partisanly tip the scales.
Merriam-Webster Thesaurus Gerrymandering synonyms: contriving, conniving, finagling, machinating, maneuvering, manipulating, plotting, scheming, wangling and more.
Make bad history repeat itself??
No, no Newsom. No, no, no.
Vote no on Proposition 50.
