Editor,
Jon Mays’ Aug. 3, 2018 commentary, “Slow-moving DMV just not acceptable,” is spot on. The long lines have been problematic for many, many years, and the DMV’s excuse that the lines are the result of REAL ID applications is a canard.

I accompanied my son recently to the Redwood City DMV to apply for a REAL ID card. We arrived at 6 a.m. and there were already four persons in line. By 6:40 a.m., there were 20 people in line, and at 7:30 a.m. … there were over 100 people in line (That figure may be low because I did not include persons in the tally who looked like they were just tagging along).
Make no mistake … the DMV is a fee collection agency. Their mission is not to legislate, investigate or regulate. They take paper currency from you in exchange for paper generated by them, e.g. vehicle registration cards. And while Jon’s “Zootopia” reference to DMVs being staffed by sloths might be a tad unfair, I’m certain I have met either Patty or Selma Bouvier at a counter station after waiting in a long line to renew my driver’s license.
During our wait, a couple of tech-savvy hostages suggested how they could fix the long line problem. I told them technology was not the answer. I suggested paying the DMV staff by the number of successful transactions completed instead of an hourly wage. If you provide DMV staffers with an incentive to eliminate long lines, they will disappear.
