Letter: Separation of church and state

That is within the lifetime of many of us! How ludicrous it seems to me to hear so many of your readers recite their religious or their personal views when it comes to same-sex marriage. For in the end, this is not a theocracy, but a democracy. In other words, there is a separation of church and state, and no one's religious points of view or their belief system has one single thing to do with law. The Declaration of Independence says "All men are created equal and they are endowed with certain inalienable rights...." No matter how hard you try, you cannot erase those words from the Declaration of Independence. If it wasn't for inclusion, women wouldn't be voting today, African Americans would still be sitting at the back of the bus, and interracial marriage would still be considered illegal and immoral. This is a fight for civil rights and bravo to the Gatto family for fighting that fight ("County declines marrige" in the Feb. 15 edition) that will soon inevitably be won! They are the true definition of family, a family filled with extreme love and commitment. I suggest that those who choose to spout their religious views to disagree, take some time first to study the Constitution.
