The articles about Councilman Matt Grocott and the San Carlos City Council are both amusing and disappointing. Though I generally find myself opposed to Grocott on the issues, the current situation demands someone point out the elephant in the room.
It is proper for the council to maintain its integrity. If Grocott has violated some ordinance, he should be accountable.
However, it is interesting that the same drive to root out the truth did not arise when Councilmen Mike King and Don Eaton were challenged about their alleged role in violating the law during the South County Fire billing scandal. Granted, no charges were filed against either councilman.
But that misses the point: Why the glaring discrepancy in reaction, particularly when the South County Fire scandal involved financial corruption and Grocott's involves a possible failure to file a disclosure duplicating one already on file for another agency, and the possibility that a recently-divorced spouse might not have spent every sleeping hour in the city?

Long-time San Carlos political observers know the answer to the question. Grocott is not part of the cushy little oligarchy that has "ruled" the city for years. He represents a threat to their power, and must be discredited and eliminated. That's why the other council members have recruited one of their clique to run against Grocott in November. It's also why Mayor Inge Tiegel Doherty is pledging to get to the bottom of this tempest in a teapot while she stood silently by when her long-term allies Eaton and King were accused of more serious lapses.
With television moving into summer re-runs, this latest San Carlos soap opera will fill a void. Maybe the city can sell its story to Hollywood and use the money to help resolve its financial problems.
