I’d like to thank Mark De Paula for his letter (in the March 21 edition of the Daily Journal ) and the reference to a “60 Minutes” segment from 1998, which was an excellent segment by the way. I did read several of the books by George Soros who De Paula sees as the villain of the piece. Soros writes in his books that he doesn’t have any answers to the world’s problems but that he sees value in working for an “Open Society” where these answers may come about.
De Paula totally confuses what the segment shows quite clearly; that he lives by the rules of the game and suggests that far more rules are needed to prevent others like himself from playing buccaneer with the currencies and the fate of the world’s national economies. So to state that the arch capitalist is trying to bring socialism to America is really laughable. De Paula then goes on to accuse him as a 14-year-old child of “assisting in locating Jewish Hungarians;” that’s quite a stretch.
Later, De Paula mentions that the Quantum Fund is illegal in the United States, which is also wrong. It simply can’t do business from here as it isn’t registered to operate here. I suggest De Paula to watch the segment far more closely and yes, it was first lady Hillary Clinton accompanying him on his philanthropic visit to Haiti and yes, “60 Minutes’” Steve Croft looks great 20 years ago. Also, the Soros books are waiting for you in the library, De Paula.
