I appreciated the Student News column from Iny Li (“Honoring those we’ve lost”) in the Daily Journal on March 14-15. One of the ways we support those dealing with mental health challenges and suicidality is be having conversations. Check in with folks. Give resources. You can call/text 988 (the suicide and crisis lifeline) if you are having a mental health crisis, or need emotional support. Also, 988 is available 24/7 and 365 days a year.
Suicide has ripple effects. One suicide affects dozens, or even hundreds, of people. For those who could use it, there are also supports out there for suicide loss survivors (people who have lost someone to suicide). Locally, Kara is a wonderful support for grief, and they also have a suicide loss survivors group. Also, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (afsp.org) is a great website to go to for resources and support.
Please don’t shy away from having those difficult conversations (a simple “how are you today?” can open dialogue). And for those of us struggling, support is out there. You are not alone.
